SR 96 Widening

Project Name

SR 96 Widening and Reconstruction from SR 87 to I-16

Location

Jeffersonville, Georgia

Owner

Georgia Department of Transportation

Project Details

The SR 96 Widening and Reconstruction project spans approximately 7.730 miles, running from SR 87 to I-16. With a scheduled completion date of June 30th, 2026, The Scruggs Company began the project in March with groundbreaking activities. As of now, clearing and grubbing work has been completed up to 75% of the total scope.

The project involves the relocation of utilities, including underground cable lines, power poles, and water mains. Currently, the focus is on moving these utilities to facilitate the road widening and reconstruction. The grading crew commenced their work in August and has already moved over 10,000 square yards of dirt.

Soon, the culvert crews will begin constructing a 4’x3′ culvert, followed by a 9’x5′ double box culvert. These structures are an integral part of the project’s drainage system.

To create a stable foundation for the road, the project requires 260,000 tons of GAB (Georgia Approved Base) as the base material for the asphalt. Since April, a stockpile of approximately 105,000 tons of GAB has been built up. Additional hauling of GAB will continue until the end of the year to ensure sufficient supply for laying rock on the subgrade.

Although still in the early stages, the project is progressing according to schedule. The Scruggs team is working diligently to meet the project’s objectives, aiming to widen and reconstruct SR 96 to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and accommodate future growth in the area.
